Reentering the Land of Social Media
It's been a month and a half since I vowed to fast from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and yes, even Words with Friends. I knew it would be a challenge to give it up completely, but now at the end of Lent season, I am glad I did it. Here's a few things I've learned from living unplugged:
- Life is better spent in reality.
- Time can be wasted either online or in real life, but I'm more aware of it when I'm doing it in real life.
- Social media isn't evil, but it can easily become my master unless I decide to master it instead.
- Facebook is really good at bringing those who are far near, and those who are near far.
- I actually have cared less than I thought I would about the 150-some notifications I missed (although I do plan to read them all on Easter).
- I definitely do not miss knowing where you went to eat for brunch, what you thought of the officiating in the Ohio State game, how your 2-year-old started potty training, or seeing the picture of your new Toms.
- Most of my Facebook friends aren't really my friends.
- God never meant for us to communicate with each other in 140 characters or less.
- Genuine human relationship is eroding fast, but if we want it to come back, all we have to do is pick up the phone, write a note, walk out the front door, and engage face to face.
What did you give up for Lent?
